I read a post from Ryan Holiday (link) about there being two types of time: Alive time and Dead time. Alive time being those moments where you’re actively working towards something you want or doing something you love. Dead time is when you’re doomscrolling or otherwise wasting your time. With that profound and deep thought, I looked at how can I better utilize my time?
Alive Time
I figured out how to habit stack something we don’t usually have “time” for with something that would make my life better and it’s super simple:
When you’re standing in line (coffee, checkout, casino, you get the idea), pull out your phone and unsubscribe from all the awful emails you get.
Stupidly simple yet hugely impactful. You’ll get less distractions throughout the day for people trying to sell you something and you do it when you’re otherwise not doing anything else. Do you really need to get hounded by butcher box every other day to buy more meat (how much meat do they think I eat?!)?
This is the combination of making use of time you otherwise wouldn’t do anything useful with and something that will pay dividends later in minimizing distraction. In a world full of people doing whatever they can to get your attention, FIGHT BACK!!
